The Global Rule of Law Conference in Cascais
The EPLO Regional Branch in Cascais alongside the EPLO Institute for the Global Rule of Law and in partnership with the Municipality of Cascais organized an International conference on "The Rule of Law and the Administration of Justice" on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 January 2025 at Casa de Santa Maria, Headquarters of the EPLO Regional Branch, Cascais. Prior to the Conference, on Friday 17 January 2025, members of the Global Rule of Law Commission held their 4th meeting at Câmara Municipal de Cascais.
The international conference featured a dynamic program of plenary reports and panel discussions, bringing together an impressive array of participants. Alongside members of the Global Rule of Law Commission, the event welcomed prominent jurists, distinguished scholars, and representatives from national governments and international organizations. Esteemed attendees included Prof. Giuliano Amato, Emeritus President of the Constitutional Court of Italy and former Prime Minister; Mr. Carlos Carreiras, Mayor of Cascais; Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, former Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel; and Prof. Maria Lúcia Amaral, Ombudsperson of the Republic of Portugal, among many other notable officials and academics.
Held over two days, the conference comprised four in-depth sessions exploring critical topics related to the Rule of Law. These included its intersection with the Administration of Justice, an examination of contemporary challenges to judicial independence, and an analysis of the social and cultural conditions necessary to uphold judicial autonomy.
